Justice League Image Revealed…But What Are They Looking At?

2017 is upon us and that means it is time for more information about blockbusters to be revealed. Other than a set visit and certain images, not much has been revealed about the upcoming Justice League. We know the lineup, we know the villain and the basic plot. But with what is known, there are still a lot of questions especially concerning Superman himself.

We see in this image that the team is leaving some sort of ship and are staring into a field. Well where was Clark Kent/Superman buried? In a field. Is this a subtle way yet not actually showing the team going to see the body of the Man of Steel? We know that Superman isn’t dead per se but his role in the movie is being kept under wraps. This is similar to the Luke Skywalker situation in The Force Awakens.

Either way it is a nice image of the team before the one key member returns. Justice League will be released in November.

The Threat of Steppenwolf

The announcement of Steppenwolf as the villain of Justice League might be a surprising one. His cameo was cut out of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was eventually released online and will be restored in the Ultimate edition of that movie. In that cameo, Lex Luthor is using the Kryptonian technology to draw up an image of Steppenwolf who is interacting with three cubes before being interrupted. The set visit by the press not only revealed that Steppenwolf will be the villain of the movie but that the objects of desire in the movie will be three Mother Boxes. A Mother Box is a cube shaped object.

Apparently three Mother Boxes are part of three different societies: Atlanteans, Amazons and Humans. This happened in more ancient times. So it wouldn’t be a shock to see Steppenwolf coming to Earth to claim these. A Mother Box is something that are key items to the New Gods, which is the race Steppenwolf belongs to. They are effectively space gods. Steppenwolf, in particular, is notable because he is the general to the Darkseid. Darkseid is his nephew but Darkseid is effectively evil incarnate and has no equal. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine that he is on a mission for his nephew.

There is precedent for this. In the recent New 52 of DC Comics, when the Justice League book launched, it was the invasion of Darkseid. It was eventually revealed that there was a simultaneous attack on a parallel Earth by none other than Steppenwolf. So this story set up Steppenwolf as someone Darkseid trusted enough to effectively fill in for him. Darkseid will no doubt be the villain for the already announced second Justice League movie. However, he does serve a purpose. He is not the ultimate big bad so it won’t be WB going all out on their first outing. He will also serve as the introduction to the New Gods. He will someone who will be powerful but not too powerful, effectively a wakeup call to the heroes of the League.

However, Steppenwolf is treated in the film it is an exciting move. WB is going full out on their more “out there” characters. Steppenwolf is an effective introduction to these concepts. Justice League will no doubt be a movie that is full of ambition and ideas that have not yet been seen on the big screen. The New Gods are coming to Earth and we better be ready.

Where Is Superman?

With the new announcement about everything Justice League, there was something missing in a lot of it. That being, the one and only, Superman. The Man of Steel is mentioned in the synopsis of Justice League but only in the past tense. Spoilers ahead for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. In that movie, Superman dies at the end of it. However, it was clearly seen that in his grave dirt was starting to rise. It was the same effect that Superman has on the environment surrounding him when he takes off in flight. It was clear that either Superman was not truly dead or somehow had been resurrected.

Henry Cavill, the actor who plays Superman, has been announced for this movie since before it even began production. In fact, in the cast billing in the synopsis, his name is still listed. When the production of Justice League was shown as Cinemacon, Cavill was shown among the cast. So it is clear that Superman is in the movie. You really cannot have a Justice League movie without Superman. Press even mentioned how they got a look of everyone’s new looks but how Superman was being kept secret. The only images of Henry Cavill were from his previous outings. Zack Snyder, the director, flat out admitted that Superman will be in the movie. So why are Warner Bros. being so cagey about something that everyone already knows? In fact there is certain precedent for something like this.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a monumental movie with major characters returning. That included Luke Skywalker. Everyone knew that Mark Hamill was reprising his role in the movie. The actor made no secret of and neither did the rest of the cast and crew. However, he was in none of the marketing of the movie. There is a key plot reason as to why he wasn’t brought up in promotions and such. It wouldn’t be too big of a surprise if they are doing the same with Superman. Everyone knows that he is going to be part of the movie but how big of a role or even how he is even brought back will be a mystery probably until the actual movie is seen.

The plot mentions the coming catastrophe and how Batman is recruiting members for the Justice League. The villain of the movie is Steppenwolf, the uncle of Darkseid. Both are members of the New Gods. Darkseid in particular has always had a special interest in Superman throughout the various incarnations. Can these two be behind Superman’s resurrection? Is it possible that Superman will be something of the heavy that is under Steppenwolf’s sway and the burgeoning League has to turn him back to their side?

Since the previous movie to feature Superman loosely adapted, “The Death of Superman”. It wouldn’t be hard to think that this movie would loosely adapt “Reign of the Supermen” which featured the return of Superman. This followed months of Superman being “dead” and he eventually returned about halfway through the story. This would be the more logical thing to do as the first half or so would be about the team forming in Superman’s absence but knowing they need more but not knowing where to get it. This would lead perfectly into Superman’s return, however that may be. These are all just speculations and thoughts. Even though this is still speculation, make no bones about it. Superman will be part of the climax of the film.
