First Ever Woman Money in the Bank Match

If you’re reading this, you’re fully aware that I am a big fan of the women’s revolution that has gone in the WWE. After the recent Superstar Shake-Up, I’m less hot on the Raw side. But the Smackdown side is killing it right now. All six women in the division; Naomi, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Carmella, Natalya and Tamina Snuka are all very unique with their own personalities. Sure there are some such as Tamina who have yet to really shine but you can see the potential there. I was getting a little wary of the women’s wrestling in the WWE once again as they were all frequently put into multi woman matches and individuality was not let to shine. But after the most recent Smackdown exclusive pay per view or event, it was announced there would be a five woman multi match to determine a number one contender.

The day finally came and the match didn’t even officially get started. Instead all women immediately started brawling with one another. It was clear that they were out to make a highlight of the night and they achieved that. All of the women got a moment to shine during the brawl. It ultimately culminated with Charlotte putting Natalya through a table (with Natalya breaking character with a grin on her face as she heard the cheers). promo320481947.jpg

The Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon came out and quickly announced that all of the women involved would be in the first ever woman Money in the Bank match. I’ve never actually seen a Money in the Bank match other than highlights on YouTube and such. This will be my first time watching not one but two Money in the Bank matches and one is making history. The following week, the women even got their own Money in the Bank briefcase (which has a feminine touch to it).

Becky, Charlotte and Natalya are the three that I am not worried about. Those three are some of the best performers working in the WWE at the moment. Though I have only seen her in action in small bits, Tamina should do just fine in the match as well. The biggest question mark is Carmella. Now I don’t think she’s the worst wrestler but she falls somewhere in the middle. This will be a true test to what she can bring to the table. If her performance in the skirmish is anything to go by, she should be okay. Plus I expect her to win because she has that x-factor in James Ellsworth by her side.

Either way it should make for an interesting match to say the least. It might be bad all things considered but that doesn’t take away the importance of the match. As the women’s roster continues to grow and grow, it is only a matter of time before we start seeing specialty matches that have been exclusive to the men become part of the women’s roster as well. I have been saying for some time I think there should be a midcard and tag team belt in the women’s roster. Now it is only a matter of time before that happens.

Becky Lynch Turning Heel Is A Good Thing

I love Becky Lynch. Absolutely love her. She is one of my favorite wrestlers in the WWE currently. She was the inaugural women’s champion on the Smackdown brand. I will be the first to admit that ever since her feud with Mickie James ended, she has been in something of purgatory. So when it was announced that Charlotte Flair would be joining the brand, all eyes were on Becky Lynch. Her reaction to seeing Charlotte joining was something of elation. These two in real life are best friends. The WWE currently is in something of a mix of real life and kayfabe (aka fiction).

Last week, Becky Lynch was at the stadium where Smackdown was performing but was not on the televised show. Just yesterday she was back on the show where she was confronted by the newly formed alliance of women heels; Natalya, Tamina and Carmella…along with James Ellsworth. They basically issued the statement that if you’re not with us then you’re against us. Becky didn’t really give an answer to the invitation. Later on Talking Smack she did refer to the group as the New Wench Order aka NwO.

During the title match between Naomi and Charlotte, this group attacked both competitors with most of their focus being on Charlotte. The crowd even started chanting, “We want Becky” but Becky was not there. When this was brought up during Talking Smack, she basically said to the effect that she feels Charlotte should fight her own battles and was tired of being the one that gets jumped. All the ingredients are there to turn Becky heel and now it is seemingly becoming a matter of when.

I do not think that her name dropping NwO was just something random to say. The biggest thing about the NwO was the babyface Hulk Hogan turning heel to lead the faction. I highly doubt that they will be calling themselves the New Wench Order as that sounds just dumb. But Becky turning on Charlotte and becoming the top heel of the women’s division makes a lot of sense. Charlotte was the top heel on the Raw division for some time so her coming to Smackdown and doing that same thing again would just be a feeling of “same old, same old”. It is also a way to get Charlotte out of the title picture for a while.

Becky Lynch turning heel would be an interesting turn of events. But with Alexa Bliss gone, the show does need a top woman heel. She would probably fall in the line of Kevin Owens or AJ Styles type of heel where she will still be getting cheered no matter what. But it would be a shot in the arm for the women’s division which is hot right now. As I said earlier, it only looks to be a matter of time.

Charlotte Flair Should NOT Win The Smackdown Women’s Championship

As of this writing, fresh import Charlotte Flair is set to face Naomi for the Smackdown Women’s Championship tomorrow. In a somewhat strange turn, Charlotte had to beat Naomi to even have this match. But frankly I think this is a bad move. Charlotte is one of the best wrestlers, men and women, in the WWE currently. There is no denying her credibility and she can elevate her competitors in matches. But she is already a five time women’s champion on the Raw brand. Now that she has come in and demanded a title shot seems a little too much, too soon.

Of course this may all be a fake out. As soon as Charlotte was announced as getting her title shot, the other women in the division (minus one but we’ll get back to that later) all huddled around in the back and seemed to be plotting. Natalya was the ringleader of this faction with Carmella and Tamina. Charlotte was the top heel for the women’s division on Raw since the brand split and even before then. There are few faces on Smackdown besides Naomi and Lana when she joins the brand. It would not surprise me if this group interferes in the match to prevent Charlotte from gaining the title and thus turning her face.

Now there’s someone who has not been mentioned and that’s Becky Lynch. The inaugural women’s champion on Smackdown, Becky has been mostly in the background since her feud with Mickie James ended. She wasn’t even on the episode where the Charlotte challenged Naomi despite being at the arena. Are they planning a Becky Lynch heel turn? It is known that Charlotte and Becky are real life best friends and have great chemistry in the ring. If Becky were to turn heel and face Charlotte, this would be a good way of rejuvenating the both of them.

We all know that Charlotte will hold the top title one day. That’s as clear as day. That doesn’t mean that they need to put the strap on her immediately though. It would just ring of favoritism and not letting anyone else shine. I also think Charlotte in real life knows this as well and would probably want to avoid that as to not burn bridges and fans.

It’s A Good Time To Be A Smackdown Fan

The WWE just underwent a “Superstar Shake Up” a draft that was not a draft. WWE logic. So certain people who were on the Raw brand got moved to Smackdown and vice versa. Unfortunately Smackdown did lose Dean Ambrose, Alexa Bliss and The Miz. I like Dean but they didn’t know what to do with him despite being the Intercontinental Champion. The Miz seemed to having a resurgence in his career thanks to the brand split. No one on Smackdown could compare to his mic skills. Alexa Bliss is a rising star who’s already been champion twice and with no one to feud with.

But what did Smackdown gain? Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, The New Day, Rusev, Charlotte Flair, Tamina Snuka and Lana. Kevin Owens was my favorite wrestler on Raw with great mic skills and equal talent in the ring. Sami Zayn is a great talent who was being squandered on Raw. Charlotte Flair was a five time women’s champion on Raw and there was nothing left for her to do. All these elements play a factor in the various people brought over to Smackdown.

Already from the first night we already had a great three way match between AJ Styles, Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin to determine the number one contender for the U.S. Championship currently held by Owens. Styles won that match and it will great to see Styles and Owens feud. The Women’s Division is a bit of a question mark at the moment. Who will start feuding with Naomi for the title. It shouldn’t be Charlotte just yet as her star is so bright so it would be best to see her feud somewhere else.
The main title, the WWE Heavyweight Championship, is in something of limbo. It is currently in contention with a feud between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt. The main problem is Bray Wyatt has been switched to Raw so no way he’s winning. Randy Orton is also in something of a lame duck championship run. He’s solid but there’s no pop to him. Probably because it’s vague if he’s supposed to be a face or heel. He did burn down someone’s house.

But there is Shinsuke Nakamura who already has a huge fanbase due to his worldwide reputation and the work he put in at NXT. There is a lot of great talent on Smackdown at the moment. It already has been interesting to see post Wrestlemania and how the product is going to be. Hopefully the creative teams and wrestlers work some great programs to entertain.

How The WWE Women’s Revolution Got Me Back Into WWE

I had fallen off of professional wrestling sometime in the early 2000’s. I always kept my ear to the ground though as I was aware of the bigger moments going on. Sometime around 2015, I just started watching Total Divas. Now say what you will say about the show and what it represents but it did pique my interest. Some of the podcasts that I listened to start listing women wrestlers that I was only vaguely aware of such as Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks. So as I my interest in WWE started to rise again, the more I started to learn about the Women’s Revolution that started somewhat in NXT.

After I went to my first live wrestling event in over ten years, I started to learn more and more about the Women’s Revolution. It really solidified after the brand split in the WWE where half of the roster went to Raw or Smackdown. This helped things become much more focused and less crowded. So stars such as Becky Lynch went to Smackdown while Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks stayed on Raw. Then there were old staples such as Nikki Bella, Naomi, Natalya who went to Smackdown. Paige stayed on Raw. Then there were call ups from NXT such as Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Bayley. It was a good time.

Sure there have been some notable failures such as Eva Marie and the whole ongoing debacle that is Paige. But overall it has been a good time. I particularly love the Smackdown Women’s Division as there looks to be much more diversity in terms of personality. The feud between Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair was one to watch that really culminated in the first women’s Hell in the Cell match that was also the first women’s match to be the main event of a pay per view.

This has really continued into Wrestlemania time where there were two women’s matches on the main card. At first the Smackdown women’s match was supposed to be on the pre-show but pressure put it on the main card. Sure both matches were multi-women matches but that’s still something. Neither matches were disappointing and all ten women performing got a moment to shine. This was one of those times that I can see all the women who performed as champion at some point or another.

Where would I like to see this goes? I would honestly like to see more championships added to the women’s division. There is only one belt for each brand but as more and more are added, it really becomes obvious there needs to be more prestige. A midcard type of belt and a tag team belt as well. The sky is the limit for the women’s division and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
