xXx: The Return of Xander Cage Review

Well it’s the best xXx movie but that isn’t saying much.
Remember how in the sequel to xXx it was casually mentioned that Xander Cage was killed in action? Don’t expect this movie to answer that question. Just expect to be reintroduced to Cage doing extreme things such as skiing in the forest after dropping 200 feet. That’s the type of movie you’re in for. It is the epitome of dumb and knows it. Not taking itself as seriously as the first and has more style than the sterile second.

Vin Diesel and Samuel L. Jackson reprise their roles. Diesel doesn’t miss a beat as Cage but SOME of his more frankly pandering dialogue from the first is gone. Gone are gratuitous references to things such as Playstation just to seem “cool”. He still looks pretty ridiculous wearing jorts. Jackson is playing a much more fun Gibbons as it would be hard not to compare the character to his more popular Nick Fury.

The rest of the cast though is pretty forgettable. Donny Yen plays the big bad of the villain. The type that wears leather and smokes cigarettes. If the character weren’t being played by Yen, it would be another generic bad guy. Toni Collette shows up as the new head of operations and it basically amounts to her scowling and staring at screens. Nina Dobrev, Ruby Rose and Deepika Padukone are the eye candy with various functions so at least they weren’t interchangeable.
The plot basically revoles around Yen’s character ability to hijack satellite and crash them into the Earth. There’s not much time used to develop the plot or characters. The movie is about 90% action. Even an exposition scene between Diesel and Yen has the characters playing hot potato with a live grenade.

The movie tries way too hard to be cool. A member of the team is an actual DJ who seemingly has a superpower to turn on his set. It is outdated in a sense that it seems to be a direct sequel to the first despite being fifteen years later.

If you want the definition of a superficial movie, this is it. Other than Cage, the characters are all lackluster. Even then Cage is just a huge stereotype as he is thr alpha male that every woman wants to and does have sex with. The action scenes do show that there was time put into them and thus they do pop. Thankfully the movie is relatively short which helps its watchability. If it was about ten minutes longer, it would have dragged the movie down. If you’re in for this movie, you’re going to watch it. If not, then I can’t recommend it.
Score: 6.5/10
