Why I’m More Excited for ‘Rogue One’ Than ‘The Force Awakens’

There is no denying that I am a huge Star Wars fan. Everybody knows this and I take no efforts to hide it either. So when The Force Awakens was released, I was in full Star Wars mania. The new canon was being formed and it was the beginning of a new era. But even going into The Force Awakens, I always knew that the film would be safe. There would and probably could not be too many risks going into it. The prequel movies, for what they’re worth, did many different things different. Not many people like what they did but you have to respect a filmmaker of not repeating some of the earlier things that he had done. The Force Awakens had many of the same beats of the original trilogy including another Death Star.

So it’s kind of ironic that a film that I’m more excited for is another movie about the Death Star. But Rogue One is the first film in the anthology series dubbed, “A Star Wars Story”. It will not follow the typical tropes that have been in the seven main films. Gareth Edwards is the director of Rogue One and I highly enjoyed his last big budget movie, Godzilla, in 2014. Sure that movie had flaws, primarily in the storytelling aspect. But you cannot say that there is not a unique style to Edwards’ work. Just look at the HALO jump sequence in that film.

Rogue One has been touted as a war film, primarily a guerilla warfare film. There are no Jedi in this film or other Force users besides the inclusion of Darth Vader. Though frequent characters in previews and ancillary materials make reference to believing in the Force, there appears to be no one using powers other than the aforementioned Vader. So it will be interesting to see how the Rebel Alliance operates. This will also be the first major victory that they will have over the Empire which will lead into the events of IV: A New Hope, which of course turns the tide of the Rebels versus the Empire.

So even though it contains things we have seen before such as the Death Star, Darth Vader and is a direct prequel to A New Hope, there is enough new in the movie. Director Orson Krennic is already one of my favorite characters due to books such as Catalyst which is a direct prequel to Rogue One. They also have a good amount of new protagonists such as Jyn Erso as well as new antagonists such as the Death Troopers. The fact that the movie is bringing in Saw Gerrera from The Clone Wars animated series which is unprecedented.  Either way it is a good time to be a Star Wars fan as no matter what we are getting all new and exciting stories.
