‘The Defenders’ Speculation

The Netflix side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been building towards The Defenders. The series that brings together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Other than Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, as of this post none of the other heroes have met one another. There have been links slowly been building throughout that link all the series together. But what will bring these disparate group of individuals together? There is one particular storyline in the comics that could serve as inspiration for the miniseries.
    Shadowland

The Marvel crossover brought together many of Marvel’s more street level characters to deal with The Hand and the organization’s growing power. This is the one constant between the comics and the tv shows. The Hand has ties to Daredevil who also seems to be the anchor character in both scenarios. There is also a tenuous connection between the organization and Iron Fist. They are also mystical ninjas and could pose a threat to Luke Cage and Jessica Jones who are genuine super powered people. Even by the end of season two of Daredevil, we have no idea what their actual plan was.

So who could bring this event together? Since Luke Cage and Iron Fist has yet to be released, the options are still unknown. There are two big culprits so far who could help cause this.

    Madame Gao

The enigmatic Madame Gao and whoever she represents. A heavy presence in the first season of Daredevil, she was supposed to be a heroin dealer. It was surely no coincidence that the name of her heroin was called “Steel Dragon” the name of Iron Fist’s archenemy and also beared the same sigil. Not much is known about her except that despite her appearance she could send Daredevil flying with one hint and that she is from somewhere “farther than China”. She also implied that she was doing things just for kicks.

    Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin

The archenemy of Daredevil who despite setbacks always finds a way to bounce back. There is a good deal that we do not know about Wilson Fisk. How did he establish the connections that we see he has at the beginning of Daredevil? How much does he actually know? He seemed to be wary of Madame Gao and cautious around The Hand. He is definitely once again on the rise to power once again and there is a vacuum and power struggles usually arise because of a vacuum.

Other than that, the heroes still do not know one another. How are they going to come together to fight whoever the antagonist is.

    Stick

Daredevil’s enigmatic blind mentor. He is also someone who knows a lot more than he lets on. The fact that the teaser for The Defenders had audio recorded of Scott Glenn as Stick saying,”You think the four of you can save New York? You can’t even save yourselves”So this character definitely has a part to play. Wherever Stick goes, The Hand is usually not far.

    Claire Temple

The hard working nurse that all of the future members have encountered or will encounter. A major supporting character in Daredevil and Luke Cage and guest star in Jessica Jones, who knows what role she will play in Iron Fist? She is the one character who has met all the heroes and members of their supporting cast. It woildnt be a surprise to see her reach out and link all the heroes together. Plus they need someone to go to for their injuries.

There are a myriad of possibilities to how The Defenders come together. It will have to be something big to justify bringing an eclectic group of people together. The series is set to begin filming later this year. More info about the series is bound to come out. It is speculated to be released in the latter half of 2017.
