When it comes to people influential in Star Wars canon, there are some people who are influential but haven’t really been explored all that much. One character in particular is Bail Organa. He is the adoptive father of Princess Leia. Not only is he the father of one of the most important people in Star Wars canon but he is also one of the founding members of the Rebel Alliance.
This was explored more in the previous continuity now dubbed Legends. But since Disney bought Lucasfilm, most previous Star Wars continuity is now gone. So essentially Bail Organa was gone now to being a mostly blank slate other than his appearances in Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith and Clone Wars. When Rogue One was announced and the timeline was revealed to be very close to A New Hope many wondered if he would appear.
There was no way that they could get a Carrie Fisher lookalike to appear in the movie. The timelines between the two movies is so thin that it would be jarring to get a replacement actress. So why not the next best thing? Audiences never saw the Organa homeworld, Alderaan, before it was blown up.
We know that Leia is very active in the Rebel Alliance by this point. Bail is also involved in this judging by his appearances in Star Wars Rebels. How involved is he? Something says that the Empire did not just target Alderaan to be blown up just because it was Leia’s homeworld. It may be a way to take out Bail.
However it was never known if he would appear in Rogue One. Today, July 15th, Star Wars Celebration is going over in London. There was a sizzle reel released of the movie and there is a quick look at someone who looks familiar to Bail’s actor, Jimmy Smits. The face of the actor was concealed but did have a similar facial hair style similar to Bail’s.
So will Bail Organa be in Rogue One? Safe bet says yes that he is. Will he have a significant role? Who knows. But it is nice to see some of the better actors who were in the much derided prequels still continue to be part of the franchise. We will all find out in December.
